œCity Housing/Prefectural Housing

  • In order to live in the public housing, one must apply during the specific periods of time. This specific applicable period of time and legal terms and conditions for the application are listed in the city newsletter.
  • During these periods, applications can be made at the City Hall Architectural Section (934-2843) for city housing, and the Yamaguchi Prefectural Housing Office (933-3880) for perfectural housing .
  • Proof of income and Alien Registration Card are required when applying.

œPrivate Housing

  • When looking for private housing, it is better to go to a real-estate agent to find some property to suit your needs. Be sure to inspect the property before renting.
  • It is better to decide the size, number of rooms, desired location, and budget before going to look at property.
  • Most apartments and houses in Yamaguchi have electricity, gas, water services and toilet facilities, but it is necessary to confirm whether or not there is a bath.
  • In Japan, the size of rooms are measured by tatami mat units. The size of one tatami mat is approximately 1.8 ~0.9 meters.
  • After legal terms and conditions of the contract have been agreed between a landlord and tenant, contract can be signed at any time.


œHousing Contract

  • After having found suitable housing, it is necessary to sign a contract.
  • When signing a contract for a house or apartment, the amount of 5 `6 times of monthly rent in cash must be paid in advance. The amount includes different types of fees.
