Spending Summer in Yamaguchi
Summer comes to Yamaguchi at the end of the rainy season, usually
in mid-July, and continues through mid-September. The average
daily temperature is over 25 degrees, with high temperatures reaching
well over 30 degrees centigrade.
●Rainy Season and Mold
- The rainy season comes to Yamaguchi sometimes in June every
year,causing consecutive days of rain and high humidity. As a
result, mold and mildew grow and become persistent problems.
- In order to prevent mold and mildew from growing during this
season, on sunny days, windows should be opened to air rooms well,
and futons should be placed outside to dry. Prevention of mold
and mildew in drawers and closets can be facilitated by the purchase
of drying agents and dehumidifiers made specifically for this
purpose. These agents can be purchased at supermarkets and drug
stores. As for leather goods such as bags and shoes are easily
damaged by mold and mildew, so special attention should be paid
in treating these items.
●How to Terminate
Bugs in Summer
Mosquitoes,
ticks, cockroaches, and other harmful insects become more prevalent
in the summertime. There are many insecticides (spray, smoke and
powder types) you can buy at a supermarket and drug store. These
products can be quite dangerous if it is used in a manner other
than recommended. At the first time of buying these products,
you should ask how to use them at the store.
●Poisonous Insects
A
number of insects which can cause harmful effects on humans are
prevalent during the summer. Please be careful of them, and if
you are bitten or stung, contact a physician immediately.
◎Centipedes (mukade)
- About five to ten centimeters in length, it has many legs and
moves very quickly.
- Many of them can be seen in hilly, damp areas.
- If you are stung by them, it is very painful and causes severe
red swelling.Therefore, you should go to see the doctor at the
dermatology as soon as possible.
◎Pit vipers (mamushi)
- About sixty centimeters in length, these snakes have brown patterns
and triangular heads. Their bites are extremely venomous.
- They live in hilly, damp areas.
- While they can hardly be found in the city, special attention
should be paid when you are hiking in bushy areas or mountains.
- When you are bitten by a pit viper, you will feel a sharp pain
in the beginning then extreme severe pain will follow. In that
case, stop blood flow around the bitten spot and seek a injection
treatment at a hospital immediately.

◎Hornets (suzumebachi)
- About 3-4 cm long, with reddish brown and black patterns
- If they are angry,they will become very furious and sting face
of a person etc..
- They are extremely venomous, and being stung can cause death.
- Their hives are round large brown and are usually located under
eaves of houses or holes on the trees, or in the ground.
- If you are stung, stop blood flow around the bitten spot and
seek a treatment at a hospital immediately.
- Close contact to the hives should be avoided. If you find a

●Emergency Treatment for Bites
and Stings
◎Centipedes:
- Wash stung area well with soap and water.
- If you are stung on arm or leg, stop blood flow on the area
of close to the heart, cut on the marks on the fang and suck out
any remaining poison.
- Apply a topical steroid cream to reduce allergic reaction around
site and cover with the clean gauze.
◎Hornets:
- Remove any remaining stingers with tweezers.
- Squeeze the stung area and suck out any remaining poison.
- Wash the area well with soap and place ice on the wound to reduce
swelling.
- Apply a topical antihistamine ointment.
If nausea, severe headaches, wheezing, allergic reaction or
shock occur, go to the hospital immediately.
●Typhoons
- During the summer and early fall, typhoons are likely to develop
in the seas south of Japan.
- Typhoons which are formed in the Pacific regions produce extremely
powerful winds and torrential rains. They are similar to hurricanes
which are formed in the Atlantic regions.
- If a massive typhoon will come close to Japan, severe damages
on the houses, power and water supply failures, flooding will
be anticipated because of strong winds and torrential rains.
- Special attention should be paid to weather reports on a TV
and radio during the typhoon season. If a typhoon will approach
to where you live, appropriate precautions should be taken by
closing storm windows and securing or moving things inside the
house which might be blown away by strong storm winds.
- It is better to make sure to store battery-operated flashlights,
foods, and water in case of a typhoon. You should not go outside
when a typhoon is approaching to where you live.
- If a typhoon hit Yamaguchi city directly, prepare to go to a
temporary shelter located at nearby schools or public buildings.
