Paying Taxes

Taxes a foreign national needs to pay in Japan include income tax, consumption tax, automobile tax, and residence tax.

œIncome Tax
I n general, income tax is automatically deducted from each month's salary of people who work for a company.@During the period of February 16 and March 15, other people are required to file final tax return for the previous year and pay the estimated taxes which will be settled by the filing the final tax return. People who earn total amount of income less than 1,030,000 yen for the year are not obligated to pay taxes.

A 5% sales tax is levied@on most purchases within the country.@In some cases sales tax is included in the original prices.

œAutomobile Tax
Levied on the owner of automobile within the country, it must be paid once a year at the end of May .

œResident Tax
Resident tax is levied on any person living in Yamaguchi City as of January 1 of each year with a yearly income of more than 970,000 yen. The amount of resident tax will be determined by the total income of the previous year.
