Residence Procedures

  • Every foreign national living in Japan should be aware of limitation of their residence status and possible length of stay in Japan.

  • Immigration Bureau controls all procedures of residing in Japan. Payments for these procedures must be made by revenue stamps, which can be purchased at post offices.

  • For procedures of residing in Japan, different kinds of documents such as a passport, an alien registration card, a certificate of enrollment (for a student) and a letter of guarantee of a sponsor are required. Change of Status and Extending Period of Stay

  • If a foreign national who resides in Japan wishes to change the activity that is the purpose of his/her residence, he/she must receive permission for change of status of residence for the new activity. Also, if a foreign national intends to extend his/her period of stay in Japan, he/she must apply to Immigration Control Bureau.

  • Procedures of applying for change of status and extending period of stay can be made at the Immigration Offices Offices listed above.
  1. Application for permission for work other than specified in the status of residence (No Charge)
    When a foreign national who wishes to engage in activities which provide an income not specified by his/her status of residence, he/she must apply for permission. -for instance, an exchange student who washes to engage in a part-time job.

  2. Application for change of status of residence (4,000yen)
    When trying to start new activities such as an exchange student who will work and live in Japan after his/her graduation, he/she must apply for the change of status.

  3. Acquisition status of residence (No charge)
    If a foreign national who was born in Japan intends to live in Japan for more than 60 days, he/she must acquire status of residence.

  4. Application for extending period of stay (4,000yen)

    If a foreign national wishes to extend his /her period of stay, he/she must apply for the extension.

    Applications for the extension can be made two month before the expiration of the current visa.

    An exchange student planning to stay in Japan for more than one year must apply for their visa every year.

  5. Reentry permit
    (Single Reentry Permit 3,000 yen, Multiple Reentry Permit 6,000 yen).

    There is a case which a foreign national living in Japan temporary leaves Japan and plans to reenter the country, he/she dose not have to apply for a new visa for reentry.

    In principle, a reentry permit can be allowed only once; however, it is also possible to apply for a multiple reentry permit.
