Financial Institutions

  • It is very dangerous to keep a large amount of cash at home. If it is possible, hold only necessary cash with you and deposit rest of it in a financial institution such as a bank. When choosing a bank, be sure to consider its location (for convenience and accessibility).

œOpening a Bank Account

  • When opening a bank account, a personal name seal and Alien Registration Card are required for the proof of personal identification. It will be convenient to fill out the forms for automatic withdrawal from your bank account for utilities and telephone bills, Having a ATM card makes banking performance possible during non-banking service hours.@When making a ATM card, a personal identification number (4-digit number) is necessary. This number must be determined by the card holder.

œBanking Hours

  • Banks are usually open from Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 am to 3:00 PM. On weekends,national holidays, and New Year holidays, banks will not be open. Most banks have ATM machines. Service hours of ATM machines vary in its location, so please be aware of that. A service charge (105 yen) may be taken for using ATM machine in late evenings of weekdays( after 6 in the evening ), weekends and National holidays, or on transactions made to the different banks. ATM machines can also be found in supermarkets, department stores, Perfectible Office, and City Hall.

œBank Books

  • Upon opening an account, a bank book will be made to record all transactions. It serves as proof of ownership of the account and is required when withdrawing money at a teller's window, thus it is important to keep it in a safe place and take it with you when going to the bank.

œWithdrawing/Depositing Money

When making a withdraw or deposit transaction at the bank, the following items are required :

(Deposit and withdrawal slips are available at the bank.)

ATM card and personal identification number (during banking hours, a bank book can be used with the ATM card to record any transaction made)

œWhen you lose a bank book or personal seal, notify the bank and police immediately.

œUsing ATM Machines

  • ATM machines can be used on non-banking hours such as weekends, national holidays.

  • Instructions about how to use ATM machines will appear on the screen of the machine. All instructions will be provided in Japanese.@Examples of instruction are as follows

  • Withdraw: press this button for withdrawing cash

  • Deposit: press this button for making a deposit

  • Account balance: press this button for current balance of the account

  • To record transactions: press this button and insert a bank book to make it update

  • Getting a loan: press this button for limited cash advances by using authorized credit cards

œProcedure for operating an ATM machines

@Example: A withdrawal of 23,000 yen from a bank account

  1. Select @ from the menu on the screen
  2. Insert a bank book (optional; not always be required)
  3. Insert an ATM card
  4. Press passwords (4-digit code)
  5. Press amount of withdrawal (after pressing numbers, make sure to press yen symbol)
  6. Amount of the withdrawal, 23,000 yen will appear on the screen.
    If this amount is correct, press to confirm the transaction
    If this amount is not correct, press to reenter the desired amount . By pressing the whole transaction will be canceled..
  7. Transaction will be processed.
  8. An ATM card and a transaction slip will be dispensed.
  9. Money will be dispensed.

œWarning

If the personal identification number is incorrectly input three times consecutively, the card will be automatically invalidated and a new card must be made. Processing fees will be charged to make a new card.
